Production Notes

The American premiere of this atonal opera by Sir Michael Tippett, produced by The Opera Company of Boston in 1979, under the direction of Sarah Caldwell. THE ICE BREAK portrayed archetypes of 1960’s American Culture and concerned racial, political and social clashes. The costumes were co-designed with Polly Palmer Smith. The chorus was dressed in a variety of white silhouettes, screen-printed with black and white photographic images from the period. The principal singers were dressed in color.
